Skills London fair 7th - 9th October

Think Up helped the Institute for Civil Engineers (ICE) with their stand at the Skills London fair at the ExCel centre in London. Young people aged 14 to 19 came to discover the huge range of careers and training open to them. Over 45,000 people attended.

To get students excited about civil engineering, Think Up invited groups of students to take up a challenge: could they build a tower as tall as the Shard at 1:200 scale out of paper, stickytape and string. The tower they built was then tested for lateral strength under wind loading - using a fan - and seismic loading, using a homemade wobble table. A prize was offered for the best tower.

“The Bridge from Ipanema” podcast with Chris Wise

In conversation with Sabine Pusch, Chris Wise reveals that the Millennium Bridge would play the opening chord of 'The Girl from Ipanema' if we just had big enough ears to hear it. He then muses on the sounds that buildings emit as they move; perhaps he's opened up a whole new field of structural engineering?

Low Carb at the Big Rig gets the temperature rising

On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th March 2010 Think Up ran the first ever Low Carb event on The Big Rig.

Forty-four Londoners currently not in employment competed in two teams to build a solar-powered shower from a skip full of low-carbon technologies and building materials.

The event required them to get to grips with plumbing in solar thermal water heaters; wiring up a solar PV array; harvesting rainwater and reusing greywater; designing and building an insulated shower cubicle; and plumbing the whole lot together. Having never met each other before, the event was as much about team-building and collaboration as it was about low-carbon construction.
